How to Prepare for Shearing Day

Shearing day can be stressful for sheep and people alike. These are my requirements to ensure I can shear while keeping animal safety and comfort as my top priority. If these conditions are not met, I likely will not shear your animals and will still charge a farm visit.

Before Shearing

  • Sheep must be withheld from food and water for a minimum of 12 hours before shearing. This is a standard practice that minimizes discomfort for the sheep during shearing and prevents respiratory and stomach issues as a result of a full stomach.

  • Sheep must be completely dry before shearing. If rain is possible, keep them indoors or under cover. Wet sheep can take many days to dry completely.

  • Sheep must be penned up in a small area, or someone must be available to catch sheep and bring them to the shearing station.

Shearing Day

  • Please provide a flat, dry, and clean area for shearing. A piece of plywood is great if you want to save fleeces.

  • If you would like to save the fiber, you are responsible for collecting and bagging the fiber. Let me know if you are shearing for fiber, and I will work to keep the fiber clean and reduce second cuts.

  • I do not need electricity at the shearing site, as my setup is battery-powered.

  • Shearing is difficult work, and I aim to keep animal welfare my highest priority. Please give me space to work and be respectful of my time.

  • Cash payment is preferred, although Venmo is accepted. â€‹
